Slonice Tamara porodila v pátek 7. října po osmé hodině večer své první slůně. Jde o samečka, který váží osmdesát kilogramů a který začal vzápětí pít. K porodu došlo za přítomnosti slonice Janity a jejího letos narozeného slůněte Maxe. Již v sobotu však od sebe obě matky se slůňaty byly na čas odděleny, protože zvědavý Max jevil o novorozeného samečka až příliš velký zájem. Pavilon však zůstává pro návštěvníky otevřen, a tak mají jedinečnou příležitost sledovat život slůněte doslova od prvních hodin po jeho narození.
„Druhé, navíc stoprocentně pražské slůně v jednom roce, to je chovatelský úspěch, o kterém jsme donedávna nemohli ani snít,“ uvedl ředitel Zoo Praha Miroslav Bobek. „Je to především zásluha našich chovatelů, ale rovněž zřizovatele, který umožnil vybudování Údolí slonů, i české diplomacie, díky níž jsme ze Srí Lanky přesně před čtyřmi lety získali Tamaru s Janitou.“
Otcem slůněte je sloní býk Ankhor, který do Zoo Praha přišel 12. srpna 2014 z Berlína a o Tamaru projevil zájem hned na začátku prosince 2014. Naproti tomu otcem Maxe, který se narodil 5. dubna 2016, je býk Mekong, žijící nyní v holandském Emmenu.
Tamara byla březí 658 dnů a její porod chovatelé již očekávali, a to nejen vzhledem k předpokládanému termínu, ale i změnám hormonálních hladin. Přesto v pátek Tamara překvapila rychlostí, s jakou své mládě porodila. Ve skutečnosti však porod začal již během předchozí noci.
„Sloni podobně jako další zvířata jsou schopni porod, ke kterému dochází během noci, pozastavit,“ říká kurátor chovu Pavel Brandl. „Tamara patrně začala rodit již v noci na pátek, ale s příchodem dne narození mláděte odložila až na následující večer. Potom už šlo všechno nesmírně rychle.“
Slůně dostane jméno až za několik týdnů a z více variant navržených pracovníky Zoo Praha je bude vybírat nejširší veřejnost.
